Many people find hair loss unsettling, especially when it's unexpected. Receding hairlines aren't surprising if you've seen it happen to a close family member. Genetics is a strong indicator of both male and female pattern hair loss.
However, with no history of baldness or hair loss in your family, suddenly seeing hair on your pillow can be unsettling. Past treatments were somewhat limited to surgical options, but now there are three very effective non-surgical hair restoration options, too.
1.) PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Treatment
Platelet-rich plasma contains growth factors that stimulate hair growth. PRP is a five-step treatment that takes about an hour.
- We draw a couple of syringes of blood from the patient
- We concentrate platelets using a special system
- We apply numbing cream to the scalp
- We make PRP injections approximately one centimeter apart throughout the area of hair loss
- We apply the remaining PRP topically to the scalp surface
Patients must wait until the following morning to wash their hair and scalp, and they can expect some redness and irritation for a day or two. You'll return for a follow-up appointment a few months later to check on hair follicle condition and to receive another treatment if necessary.
2.) Prescription Treatment
Propecia is an FDA-approved prescription oral medication to help prevent hair loss in men. It keeps testosterone from turning into the hormone dihydrotestosterone which causes shrinkage of hair follicles in men. However, if you stop taking Propecia, your hair loss will revert to its original state.
Prescription hair loss treatments for women depends largely on the cause of the hair loss, so you should discuss with your dermatologist what treatment is best for you.
3.) Topical Treatments
Effective topical treatments for hair loss in men and women usually contain Minoxidil (commonly known as Rogaine). Minoxidil is the FDA-approved key ingredient in most shampoos, lotions, and conditioners used in the treatment of hair loss. Others contain combinations of Peptidyl-4 and monolaurin or Creatine and Terapeptide. Your dermatologist will help you decide which one is best for you, but here are a few advantages offered by these treatments:
- Oxygenation and rejuvenation of hair follicles
- Concealment of hair loss
- Building up and strengthening of hair
- Stimulating nutrient exchanges in hair bulb
- Hair appears fuller and shinier
